Jill Scott is the only daughter of her mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia the state of Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. Since she was the only child She was also raised through her maternal grandparents. Scott attended Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating, Scott enrolled into Temple University. In addition to working two part-time jobs, Scott also studied secondary teaching in Temple University. She was hoping to become the high school's English teacher. However, her dream was put on hold when after 3 years of studies and as a teachers aide she dropped out of the college. Being a poet She began to sing in poetry performances live. Then she joined together with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to create a group. You Got Me, their joint song, was written by the duo. The singer was initially spotted as a performer at the Roots Show. The show led to collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. She gained performance experience in the Canada Tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was the first artist signed to Hidden Beach Recordings.
