Jill Scott is the only daughter of her mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia the state of Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. Since she was the only child She was also raised through her maternal grandparents. Scott attended Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating, Scott enrolled into Temple University. In addition to working two part-time jobs, Scott also studied secondary teaching in Temple University. She was hoping to become the high school's English teacher. She gained performance experience in the Canada Tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was the first artist signed to Hidden Beach Recordings.
